Romans 1:1 - “servant” (Greek: douloV - doulos)

The word translated “servant” is a Greek word that referred to a slave, someone who is owned by another.

By referring to himself as a slave in Romans 1:1 Paul acknowledges that Jesus owned him (body and soul).

In other places in the New Testament, we are taught that all Christians are Jesus’ slaves because He has purchased them by His dying on their behalf:

You [Christians] are not your own; you were bought at a price. Therefore honor God with your body. (1 Corinthians 6:19b-20)

Be shepherds of the church of God, which he bought with his own blood. (Acts 20:28b)

And they sang a new song: "You [Christ] are worthy to take the scroll and to open its seals, because you were slain, and with your blood you purchased men for God from every tribe and language and people and nation. (Revelation 5:9)
