It should be
noted that the death spoken of in this passage involves more
than just the separation of the soul from the body (physical death).
It also
refers to spiritual death (alienation from God) which eventually results in physical death.
God told Adam in Genesis
On the day
that Adam ate the fruit he died spiritually (i.e., he
experienced a separation from God and all that goes with that).
As a result of
spiritual death, Adam eventually died physically as well.
Genesis 5:5 - Altogether, Adam lived 930 years, and
then he died.
We on the other hand are born, in fact conceived, spiritually
dead (i.e., from the moment of
conception we are alienated from God)
Psalm 58:3 - Even from birth the wicked go astray; from the womb they are wayward and speak lies.
Psalm 51:5
-
Surely I was sinful at birth, sinful from the time my mother
conceived me.
As a result, we
eventually die physically as well.
