Romans 5:12 - Death Came to All Men

•        It should be noted that the death spoken of in this passage involves more than just the separation of the soul from the body (physical death).

•        It also refers to spiritual death (alienation from God) which eventually results in physical death.

•        God told Adam in Genesis 2:17 “in the day that you eat from [the tree of the knowledge of good and evil] you shall surely die. ” (NASB)

•        On the day that Adam ate the fruit he died spiritually (i.e., he experienced a separation from God and all that goes with that).

•        As a result of spiritual death, Adam eventually died physically as well.

–       Genesis 5:5 - Altogether, Adam lived 930 years, and then he died.

•        We on the other hand are born, in fact conceived, spiritually dead (i.e., from the moment of conception we are alienated from God)

–       Psalm 58:3 - Even from birth the wicked go astray; from the womb they are wayward and speak lies.

–       Psalm 51:5 - Surely I was sinful at birth, sinful from the time my mother conceived me.

•        As a result, we eventually die physically as well.

–       Hebrews 9:27 - It is appointed for men to die once [physically]
