Romans 6:2, 7, 11 - The Believer’s Death to Sin

•        In Romans 6, it is stated three times that believers “have died to sin”

–      Romans 6:2 -  We died to sin; how can we live in it any longer?

–      Romans 6:7 - Anyone who has died has been freed from sin.

–      Romans 6:11 - Count yourselves dead to sin but alive to God in Christ Jesus.

•        These expressions mean that believers, through their identification with Christ, are dead to the GUILT of sin.

–       They are viewed by God as if they themselves died in the death of Christ and suffered the full penalty of sin’s guilt.

–       Sin can no longer make any legal claim on them.

–       Thus, they are dead to sin, free from it’s condemnation

•        That believers are not (completely) dead to the influence or power of sin in their lives is proved by both the Bible and Christian experience:

–      Galatians 6:1 - Brothers, if someone [a believer] is caught in a sin . . .

–      1 Corinthians 8:13 - If what I eat causes my brother to fall into sin . . .

–      1 John 5:16 - If anyone sees his brother commit a sin . . .
