Romans 8:1-39 - The Security of the Believer in Christ

•        Romans 8 is considered by many scholars to be one of the greatest chapters in all of God’s Word.

–       “If the the Holy Scriptures were a ring and the Epistle to the Romans its precious stone, chapter eight would be the sparkling point of the jewel.” (Spener)

•        The Holy Spirit is referred to more frequently in this chapter than in any other chapter of the Bible - a total of 19 times (an average of once every two verses). The closest competitor, 1 Corinthians 12, mentions the Holy Spirit an average of once every three verses!

•        Chapter eight, however, is not about the Holy Spirit Himself, but is about what the Holy Spirit does for believers.

•        In a word, the Holy Spirit gives believers assurance - thus the theme of this chapter is the “security of the believer in Christ”.

–       The chapter begins with a proclamation that there is “no condemnation” for those who are in Christ

–       The chapter ends with a proclamation that nothing can separate us from the love of God
