Romans 1:21 - “darkened” (Greek: skotizw - skotizo)

Darkness (the absence of light), when used to describe the heart, means the absence of enlightenment. In the Bible, it generally refers to an ignorance that grows out of moral depravity.

When Paul tells us that the Gentiles’ “foolish hearts were darkened(Romans 1:21) he means that they had become ignorant due due their moral depravity (suppressing the knowledge of God and worshiping idols).
