Romans 1:24-28 - Homosexuality - A Biblical View

We live in a society where homosexuality is often viewed as a neutral or perhaps even fashionable “lifestyle” choice.

God views homosexual practices as utterly sinful. Notice in Romans 1:24, 26, and 28 homosexual activity is depicted as further degradation on the part of those who are already in rebellion against God.

The giving over to homosexuality is specifically cited in each of these verses as a God’s punishment of the Gentiles for their rejection of Him as God.

Notice the words and phrases God (speaking through the apostle Paul) uses to describe homosexual practices:

verse 24: “sinful”, “sexual impurity”, “degrading”

       verse 26: “unnatural”

       verse 27: “lust”, “indecent”, “perversion”

verse 28: “depraved”, “what ought not to be done”

Today it is commonly thought that homosexuals are “born that way” and therefore they can’t ever change. The Bible teaches otherwise:

1 Corinthians 6:9-11 Do not be deceived: Neither the sexually immoral nor idolaters nor adulterers nor male prostitutes nor homosexual offenders . . . will inherit the kingdom of God. And that is what some of you were [notice the past tense!]. But you were washed, you were sanctified, you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God.

Paul is not alone in his condemnation of homosexual practices:

2 Peter 2:6 - [God] condemned the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah [two towns mentioned in Genesis 19 as being full of homosexuals] by burning them to ashes, and made them an example of what is going to happen to the ungodly

Jude 1:7 - In a similar way, Sodom and Gomorrah and the surrounding towns gave themselves up to sexual immorality and perversion. They serve as an example of those who suffer the punishment of eternal fire.

Revelation 21:8 - But the cowardly, the unbelieving, the vile, the murderers, the sexually immoral, those who practice magic arts, the idolaters and all liars-- their place will be in the fiery lake of burning sulfur. This is the second death."
