“. . . what ought not to be done . . .”
The Twenty-one Vices of Romans 1:29-31 

•        Group of Four -  “They have become filled with every kind of  . . .” (Romans 1:29a)

–       wickedness - immorality, transgression of God’s laws

–       evil - to take delight in doing what is wrong

–       greed - pursuit of one’s own interests with complete disregard for the rights of others

–       depravity - badness in general

 

•        Group of Five - “They are full of . . .” (Romans 1:29b)

–       envy - keen displeasure aroused by seeing someone having something which you begrudge him

–       murder -

–       strife - quarrelsome disposition and its consequences

–       deceit - cunning treachery

–       malice - malignity, spite, the desire to harm people

 

•        Group of Twelve (Romans 1:30-31)

–       gossips - a “whispering” slanderer, who destroys other people’s reputations, but does so in secret

–       slanderers - One who spreads a malicious falsehood about another. What gossips do secretly slanderers often do openly

–       God-haters -

–       insolent - they treat others with contempt, as beneath them.

–       arrogant - to appear above others, “stuck-up”

–       boastful - those who try to impress others by making big claims, a braggart, charlatan, quack, imposter

–       they invent ways of doing evil - those who take special delight in inventing original methods of destroying their fellow man

–       they disobey their parents - 

–       senseless - they are stupid because all along they have been unwilling to listen to God

–       faithless - covenant-breakers, untrustworthy

–       heartless - without natural (family) affections, sometimes used in connection with infanticide

–       ruthless - without mercy, cruel
