Romans 2:5 – The Day of God’s Wrath

Romans 2:5 - But because of your stubbornness and your unrepentant heart, you are storing up wrath against yourself for the day of God's wrath, when His righteous judgment will be revealed.

•        The Bible teaches that in the future, God will pour out His wrath on sinful men in the form of eternal judgement.

–      Hebrews 6:1-2 - Therefore let us leave the elementary teachings about . . .  eternal judgment.

–      John 3:36  . . .  whoever rejects the Son will not see life, for God's wrath remains on him.”

•        The Bible indicates that any suffering that we experience in this life cannot even be compared with the suffering of those who experience God’s eternal wrath.

–      Mark 9:43-48 - If your hand causes you to sin, cut it off. It is better for you to enter life maimed than with two hands to go into hell, where the fire never goes out. And if your foot causes you to sin, cut it off. It is better for you to enter life crippled than to have two feet and be thrown into hell. And if your eye causes you to sin, pluck it out. It is better for you to enter the kingdom of God with one eye than to have two eyes and be thrown into hell, where 'their worm does not die, and the fire is not quenched.’

–      Luke 12:4-5 - "I tell you, my friends, do not be afraid of those who kill the body and after that can do no more. But I will show you whom you should fear: Fear Him [God] who, after the killing of the body, has power to throw you into hell. Yes, I tell you, fear Him.

–      Matthew 13:49-50 - This is how it will be at the end of the age. The angels will come and separate the wicked from the righteous and throw them into the fiery furnace, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.

•        As bad as it is to experience God’s eternal wrath, the Bible indicates that it will be worse for some on that day than it will be for others! In other words, not everyone will be punished to the same degree.

–      Matthew 10:15 - I tell you the truth, it will be more bearable for Sodom and Gomorrah on the day of judgment than for that town.

–      Matthew 11:22 - But I tell you, it will be more bearable for Tyre and Sidon on the day of judgment than for you.

–      Luke 12:47-48 - That servant who knows his master's will and does not get ready or does not do what his master wants will be beaten with many blows. But the one who does not know and does things deserving punishment will be beaten with few blows. From everyone who has been given much, much will be demanded; and from the one who has been entrusted with much, much more will be asked.

•        That is why Paul tells the Jews that they are “storing up wrath” against themselves as they continue in their stubbornness and unrepentance - they are adding to their future judgement.
